where are you spending the first day of summer?

spotted. from the fairway parking lot in red hook, the beginnings of the brooklyn crab shack! i was pleased to learn that the restaurant is being opened by the owners of alma, another red hook spot that is fucking delicious.
The space will encompass two decks overlooking the New York Harbor, so like Alma, it should boast unrivaled views. They'll serve seafood from up and down the Atlantic coast and will offer salads, soups, sandwiches, and a raw bar. There are also rumors of miniature golf. It's unclear how long construction should take—it's a major undertaking and all of the owners all have small children—but they hope to open by this summer. (via)

trending : yeti crabs

i saw this three times on the internet in a 24 hour period, so i absolutely must share it with you:
Scientists doing their first exploring of deep-sea vents in the Antarctic have uncovered a world unlike anything found around other hydrothermal vents, one populated by new species of anemones, predatory sea stars, and piles of hairy-chested yeti crabs.
The yeti crabs seem to cultivate "gardens" of bacteria on their chests, which are covered with hairy tendrils. These bacterial mats almost certainly provides the crabs with sustenance, Rogers said. In turn, predatory seven-armed sea stars stalk the periphery of the vents, snacking on unfortunate crabs. (via
y'all're gross. see a video of them here.

you're welcome!

With its enormous legs and lethal claws, this monster of the deep is already the biggest crab ever seen in Britain.

But astonishingly, the arthropod - which measures a staggering 10ft from claw to claw - is still growing, and could live until it is 100.

Nicknamed 'Crabzilla' after the fictional giant monster, the Japanese Spider Crab has a body the size of a basketball and its legs can straddle a car. They will eventually measure a massive 15ft. (via)
