interesting choices
More interesting in the Billboard story, though, is the way Williams described how he captured each model in the making of this video, and specifically the soundtracks he played:
While shooting the video, he blasted The Prodigy for Clark. For Keiji Haino, the Japanese artist? “No music,” says Williams. “I had to use that, his silence.” Love only wanted to listen to her own songs; Manson “brought it” with Jay Z, even though he only listened to Justin Timberlake while prepping. “All of the hair and makeup ladies [said they] were fanning themselves, like, ‘That is the sexiest guy I’ve ever met,’ “ says Clark of Manson. fran lebowitz in elle
her style is certainly not my favorite thing about her, but i could listen to her talk about anything.
When we were young, we knew things. We knew basic history, even as it related to fashion. Now, when something reappears, an 18 year old has no clue that it's a revival. Despite the fact that they're almost always online they don't get references.
I think that's part of why visual things are becoming so derivative. Designers now, they all have these things called mood boards. I suppose they think a sense of discovery equals invention. It would be as if every writer had a board with paragraphs of other writers—'Oh, I'll take a little bit of this, and that, he was really good.' Yes, he was really good! And that is not a mood board, it is a stealing board.READ IT.

it's actually not that uninteresting.
Like the best lists, the chronological order of every fashion brand that Jay Z mentions in his lyrics tells a story. This story is now on a T-shirt, created by Katherine Bernard. She spent three months sifting through all of Jay Z's catalogue. A slice, from Reasonable Doubt into In My Life: Volume 1: “Reebok Armani Bally Calvin Klein Levi’s Guess Versace Rolex Rolex Victoria’s Secret Rolex.” (via)

trend alert : normcore
this is important.
Jeremy Lewis, the founder/editor of Garmento and a freelance stylist and fashion writer, calls normcore “one facet of a growing anti-fashion sentiment.” His personal style is (in the words of Andre Walker, a designer Lewis featured in the magazine’s last issue) “exhaustingly plain”—this winter, that’s meant a North Face fleece, khakis, and New Balances. Lewis says his “look of nothing” is about absolving oneself from fashion, “lest it mark you as a mindless sheep.” (via)

a dress that came out of a 3D printer
Dita Von Teese (of course) debuted the first ever wholly 3D printed gown at the Ace Hotel on Monday, designed by Michael Schmidt. Looks like a Zaha project.
The dress is made of powdered nylon, a flexible, fabric-like substance that's most often used for architectural modeling (and -- who knew? -- is comfy enough to wear). The dress was then polished and lacquered black and covered with 12,000 black Swarovski crystals.

anne hathaway's oscar dress controversy
i knew that people didn't really like anne hathaway's pink prada oscar dress. i thought this was because people just basically don't seem to like anne hathaway (note: i like anne hathaway), or because the chest darts looked like nipples, but it turns out there was more to this story.
anne switched dresses two hours before show time
she was supposed to wear the valentino dress in the middle
she switched because she found out that amanda seyfried's dress was a look-a-like alexander mcqueen
jennifer aniston also switched from a look-a-like nude valentino to a red valentino
seems to me that amanda seyfriend should have been the one to switch dresses to give the future oscar winner her moment in the sun in her first choice dress.
ultimately anne apologizes for switching
