a dress that came out of a 3D printer
Dita Von Teese (of course) debuted the first ever wholly 3D printed gown at the Ace Hotel on Monday, designed by Michael Schmidt. Looks like a Zaha project.
The dress is made of powdered nylon, a flexible, fabric-like substance that's most often used for architectural modeling (and -- who knew? -- is comfy enough to wear). The dress was then polished and lacquered black and covered with 12,000 black Swarovski crystals.

congratulations, watson!
that robot schooled ken and brad. this article has a lot of extra watson info, including some possible real-life applications of the language-recognition technology developed during his creation.
“I had a great time and I would do it again in a heartbeat,” said Mr. Jennings. “It’s not about the results; this is about being part of the future.”
For I.B.M., the future will happen very quickly, company executives said. On Thursday it plans to announce that it will collaborate with Columbia University and the University of Maryland to create a physician’s assistant service that will allow doctors to query a cybernetic assistant. The company also plans to work with Nuance Communications Inc. to add voice recognition to the physician’s assistant, possibly making the service available in as little as 18 months.
“I have been in medical education for 40 years and we’re still a very memory-based curriculum,” said Dr. Herbert Chase, a professor of clinical medicine at Columbia University who is working with I.B.M. on the physician’s assistant. “The power of Watson- like tools will cause us to reconsider what it is we want students to do.” (via)

should you buy verizon's iphone?
by most accounts, yes! this review is the most helpful one i've read, breaking down the differences between the iphones on at+t and verizon without getting all nerdy and boring.
I took the Verizon iPhone to five cities, including the two Bermuda Triangles of AT&T reception: San Francisco and New York. Holding AT&T and Verizon iPhones side by side in the passenger seat of a car, I dialed 777-FILM simultaneously, and then rode around until a call dropped. (Why that number? Because I wanted to call a landline, eliminating the other person’s cell reception from the equation. Also, Mr. Moviefone can carry the entire conversation by himself, so I could concentrate on the testing.)
In San Francisco, the AT&T phone dropped the call four times in 30 minutes of driving; the Verizon phone never did. The Verizon iPhone also held its line in several Manhattan intersections where the AT&T call died. At a Kennedy airport gate, the AT&T phone couldn’t even find a signal; the Verizon dialed with a smug yawn. (via)i'm gonna wait for the iphone5, in case you were wondering.

harnessing the power of the internet...
...to make telephone calls.
Google entered a new business beyond Internet search on Wednesday with a service within Gmail to make phone calls over the Web to landlines or cellphones.
The service will thrust Google into direct competition with Skype, the Internet telephone company, and with telecommunications providers. It could also make Google a more ubiquitous part of people’s social interactions by uniting the service for phone calls with e-mail, text messages and video chats.
“It’s one place where you can get in touch with the people that you care about, and how that happens from a network perspective is less important,” said Charles S. Golvin, a telecommunications analyst at Forrester Research.
Gmail has offered voice and video chat for two years, but both parties must be at their computers. Google said the new service would work well for people in a spot with poor cellphone reception or for those making a quick call from their desk. (via)thx googz!

pew! pew pew!
boeing's hot new shit, the dreamliner 787, took its maiden flight yesterday. she's made out of a plastic-titanium material, reducing overall weight, so the greedy airlines won't have to spend so much money on gas. also, she's got some pretty hot2death interiors. some renderings show sexy lounges, private bedrooms, and even places to park your bmw!
yesterday's flight kicks off what will be a 9-month testing process. boeing has already sold 840 of these babies, which are expected to hit the skies commercially late next year. i hope i get to go on one!!
