nymag's justin davidson offers an update on the governor's island re-design:

With $260 million of the city’s money, workers are shoring up seawalls, running pipes and cable, reroofing historic buildings, and, most dramatically, shaping a new landscape. While bureaucrats wrangled and budgets festered, the Dutch architect Adriaan Geuze and his firm West 8 spent years observing the summertime crowds and their habits of leisure. They have plowed that knowledge into a design that’s ambitious and spectacular, but also freewheeling and improvisational. (via)

the nytimes has a heart-lifting article and slideshow depicting the wonders of governor's island. if you haven't gone, you should. and soon.

Its 172 acres include empty Victorian houses, imposing forts, a parade ground and ball fields, an artificial beach and an encircling promenade with arresting panoramic views of the Statue of Liberty, Manhattan, Brooklyn and New Jersey. And increasingly over the last four years, from May to October — with visitors now riding hourly on weekend ferries from Brooklyn and Manhattan — the island has been shaping a new culture of its own. Its participants include trapeze artists, bicyclists, conceptual artists, D.J.’s, musicians, dancers and dramatists, and its attractions range from views of the New York Harbor to a free miniature-golf course designed by an arts group, where fanciful stations allow players to take metaphorical potshots at a national missile defense shield or putt a ball in support of carbon-neutral footprints. what did you do this weekend?

i had an 11 biscuits weekend. on saturday, me and thomas wilhelm and rhonda rulebook and g.animalz and lillywhitefish and bun-bun and emilube and the whole gang went out to governor's island for a picnic and some bike rides! starla was even there, and by "there" i mean "on the same small island as me but couldn't be bothered to stop by and say hello."



n-e-wayz. one major reason for going on this particular day was that there was a free concert at "the beach", featuring the morning benders and freelance whales. two of my recent faves, as you may know. really quickly, i'll just say the morning benders put on one of the best live shows i've seen in ever. y'all should totes go see 'em. here they are doing a near-perfect cover of fleetwood mac's "dreams".

oh and we also saw an air race. it looked like this and sounded even crazier. pew PEW!

governor's island plan by west 8.

The plan, by Adriaan Geuze of the Dutch landscape architecture firm West 8, calls for a park that, if realized, will eventually include a cluster of steep, artificially created hills that form a focal point at the park’s center, visually tying it back to the city. Its wildly original array of parkscapes — including a “hammock grove,” a grottolike shelter, playing fields and marshlands — will give the island the kind of strong identity it currently lacks. When considered with Michael Van Valkenburgh’s Brooklyn Bridge Park, under construction across the harbor in Brooklyn, it represents a shift in the character of the city’s park system as a whole that is as revolutionary as Robert Moses’ early public works projects or Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux’s Central Park. deer escapes new jersey

this plucky duck swam across new york harbor to get away from new jersey and was found roaming the shores of blissful governor's island. unfortunately for the deer, the rescue squad took him to staten island to live in a nature preserve. new jersey to staten island is really more of a lateral move, no?

When the conversion of Governors Island from old military base to whimsical fantasyland is complete (current estimate: 2052), the island will offer visitors the use of 3,000 wooden bicycles for their pedaling pleasure. You see what happens when you leave the Dutch in charge of something? (curbed)
