Maria Sharapova announced Monday that she failed a drug test at this year's Australian Open, where she'd reached the quarterfinals before losing to Serena Williams. Sharapova said she received a letter from the International Tennis Federation on March 2 that said she'd tested positive for meldonium, a drug she says she's been taking since 2006. The drug, which is also known as mildronate, became illegal for pro tennis players on January 1, and Sharapova said that while she received an email from the World Anti-Doping Agency about changes to its tennis program, she did not look at it. (via)dolce must be spinning in her grave.

It just keeps getting worse
Remember Patrick Witt? The Yale qb we reported on when he made the mistake of choosing to play in the game we were going to instead of going to his Rhodes interview? Then it turned out his coach was a liar? Turns out he may have been lying too and he is accused of being a sexual assailant.
GULP!

NEW HAVEN —Yale University began an internal review Thursday to determine if its football coach, Tom Williams, was being truthful when he listed himself as a Rhodes scholarship candidate on his résumé.

yale qb urpdate
In lots of the initial stories on Patrick Wit, the Yale QB who chose "The Game" over his Rhodes Scholarship finalist interview, it was reported that his coach also passed on the scholarship in order to pursue professional football. Turns out that might have been an overstatement...(gulp)
"Witt was unable to be reached for comment. He has refused to speak about his decision this week, releasing only a statement saying that he would withdraw the application and concentrate on the Harvard game. He informed Rhodes officials of his decision last Sunday night, and it took them a bit by surprise.
“It is rare for someone to decline an interview,” Gerson said. “I cannot remember anyone else who has ever declined an interview for an athletic event."
*sigh*
