Now a spectacular new project is underway in Switzerland that immediately drew my attention: a skyscraper in the middle of the mountains. The location is the village of Vals, in the canton of Graubünden. Even in multilingual Switzerland, Graubünden is remarkable: with native speakers of Swiss German, Italian, and Romansh, it is the country’s only trilingual canton. This spot in a beautiful arm of the Anterior Rhine valley is home to about 1,000 people. Approximately the same number of sheep are said to live there as well, but perhaps that’s just a rumor. The planned building will be 80 stories tall and soar 1,250 feet into the sky. That’s 23 feet higher than the Federation Tower in Moscow – which currently qualifies as Europe’s tallest building – and exactly as tall as the Empire State Building minus the antenna. (via)
why not? well, a million reasons actually...

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard resigned Wednesday after the Australian Labor Party voted her out of its leadership.
She had called for the vote herself after months of inner-party friction ahead of a general election due in September.
Her rival, former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, takes her place as party leader, after winning the internal ballot in a 57-45 vote, according to an ALP spokesman. (via)

MoMA has announced plans to demolish williams & tsien's iconic american folk art museum:
“It’s very rare that a building that recent comes down, especially a building that was such a major design and that got so much publicity when it opened for its design — mostly very positive,” said Andrew S. Dolkart, the director of Columbia University’s historic preservation program. “The building is so solid looking on the street, and then it becomes a disposable artifact. It’s unusual and it’s tragic because it’s a notable work of 21st century architecture by noteworthy architects who haven’t done that much work in the city, and it’s a beautiful work with the look of a handcrafted facade.” (via)
architecture nerds everywhere are starting up one-sentence-long petitions and calling for boycotts. where is ada louise when you need her?

yale qb urpdate

In lots of the initial stories on Patrick Wit, the Yale QB who chose "The Game" over his Rhodes Scholarship finalist interview, it was reported that his coach also passed on the scholarship in order to pursue professional football. Turns out that might have been an overstatement...(gulp)

"Witt was unable to be reached for comment. He has refused to speak about his decision this week, releasing only a statement saying that he would withdraw the application and concentrate on the Harvard game.  He informed Rhodes officials of his decision last Sunday night, and it took them a bit by surprise.

“It is rare for someone to decline an interview,” Gerson said. “I cannot remember anyone else who has ever declined an interview for an athletic event."

*sigh*

NOT GUILTY!

somehow the casey anthony story slipped right past my usually perceptive senses. all of this momentum toward the verdict has been building over the weekend, and i've just been like "who?" anyway, the verdict is IN! she's not guilty?

so, the office and gchat and facebook are a-buzz with the news, and i decided the least i could do is read a wikipedia page. i don't think anyone will be surprised to learn that it was highly complimentary of the state of tennessee:
The Anthony case broke new ground regarding scientific evidence.
University of Tennessee's "Body farm" discovered "hair banding," a phenomenon in which hair roots can form a dark band after death. A hair found in the trunk of the Anthony car exhibited this pattern.[50] Also new is the work of University of Tennessee's Oak Ridge National Laboratory in which air extracted from the trunk of the Anthony car revealed human decomposition and the presence of chloroform.[50] (via)
so, despite the best efforts of the brilliant scientists at my alma mater and the home of the atom bomb, florida still managed to blow it. GO VOLS!!

poor nancy pelosi.

i've always loved her. she's strong and fiery and intelligent, so republicans hate her, of course. her leadership in congress has been remarkable, and i'm sad we'll be losing that. this morning, npr did a little biography piece on her.
