The conundrum that Samuel I. Schwartz, the traffic engineering expert, faced was this: How could the already jam-packed streets in the heart of Brooklyn accommodate thousands of extra cars filled with fans traveling to a basketball arena and desperately searching for parking?

His answer, revealed on Tuesday to a panel of Brooklyn officials with all the flourish and detail of a general planning to storm the beaches of Normandy, was to discourage driving entirely, by cutting the number of parking spaces at the Barclays Center in half.

“We will scare drivers away from the arena,” Mr. Schwartz said in an interview. “My message to New Yorkers is, Don’t even think of driving to the Barclays arena.” (via)

the new york times tackles the evolving nature of parking lots, and the new approaches in their design:

As the critic Lewis Mumford wrote half a century ago, “The right to have access to every building in the city by private motorcar in an age when everyone possesses such a vehicle is the right to destroy the city.” Yet we continue to produce parking lots, in cities as well as in suburbs, in the same way we consume all those billions of plastic bottles of water and disposable diapers.

What to do?

For starters we ought to take these lots more seriously, architecturally. Many architects and urban planners don’t. Beyond greener designs and the occasional celebrity-architect garage, we need to think more about these lots as public spaces, as part of the infrastructure of our streets and sidewalks, places for various activities that may change and evolve, because not all good architecture is permanent. BRB Outside

While we were disappointed to miss J.'s bday trip upstate, A. and I took our own trip to the BERKSHIRES!

We went to David Chester French's House. He designed the sculpture inside the Lincoln Memorial. We also did some freshwater Kayaking. check it!

the new NYC taxi

the city just awarded the contract for 13,000 taxis to nissan, and they should appear sometime in 2013.

The NV200 will be manufactured in Mexico and converted for taxi duty at a yet to be determined facility in the New York metropolitan area. The price is expected to be approximately $29,000. In stark contrast to the gas-guzzling, V8-powered Crown Victoria, the NV200 will run on a fuel-efficient four-cylinder engine and get 25 miles per gallon.

Nissan says its taxi will have room for four passengers, a transparent roof for sightseeing, 12V and USB charging outlets for mobile electronic devices and a grape phenol-coated air filter to keep things fresh in the cabin. The NV200 also will be the first taxi to be crash tested with all equipment installed, including the security partition, and will be equipped with front and rear side curtain airbags. (via)

there's a bit of a scuttlebutt, as the model will not be built in the US (none of the 3 finalists would've been). i think its ugly, and am a little appalled that they didn't select an american-made hybrid or electric. seems like this would've been a great opportunity for local or at least domestic job-creation. oh well. ;(
