the guy who beat nadal: out (injury).

and in the most upsetting news of the day:

i guess the grass was pretty slippery.

wimbledon has begun, and some of the ladies are serving up some #SHADE

y'all probs heard about serena's unflattering rolling stone interview, in which she ALLEGEDLY did a little bit of victim-blaming re: the steubenville rape case. but that's small potatoes in comparison to some shit-talking she did about an unnamed (maria sharapova) fellow competitor:
"There are people who live, breathe and dress tennis. I mean, seriously, give it a rest." Serena exits the car and the conversation moves on to a top-five player who is now in love. "She begins every interview with 'I'm so happy. I'm so lucky' – it's so boring," says Serena in a loud voice. "She's still not going to be invited to the cool parties. And, hey, if she wants to be with the guy with a black heart, go for it." (An educated guess is she's talking about Sharapova, who is now dating Grigor Dimitrov, one of Serena's rumored exes.)
in the words of joel: "OOOooohhhhHHhHhhh GURRRLLLLL." sharapova took a moment to respond when she told reporters:
"Obviously I have a tremendous amount of respect for Serena and what she's achieved on the court," Sharapova said. "If she wants to talk about something personal, maybe she should talk about her relationship and her boyfriend that was married and is getting a divorce and has kids. Talk about other things, but not draw attention to other things. She has so much in her life, many positives, and I think that's what it should be about."
advantage: SHARAPOVA!!

but THEN, it seems, serena remembered that she is a lady, or she got scared that maria might have some more things to say:
But even though Williams never acknowledged it was Sharapova she was talking about, Williams said she was "told of the comments," and chased Sharapova down at a party to apologize, probably for fear of another Russian left hook. She chose to squash the budding tennis beef rather than respond. "I made it a point to reach out to Maria as well, because she was inadvertently brought into the situation by assumptions made by the reporter," she said. "I personally talked to Maria at the player party, incidentally. I said: 'Look, I want to personally apologize to you if you are offended by being brought into my situation. I want to take this moment to just pour myself, be open, say I’m very sorry for this whole situation.'"
jicydak, serena has beaten sharapova in their last 12 meetings, and the last time maria won was over NINE years ago. so now you have a reason to follow the ladies' side of the bracket this wimbledon.

Who is that hot guy sitting next to Ivan Lendl in Andy Murray's box at Wimbledon?

His name is Daniel Vallverdu and he is a Venezuelan hottie who hits balls with Murray as a member of his coaching staff. Locker room shenanigans.

UPDATE: NEVER FORGET!!!

also andy murray is trying to beat novak djokovic right now at the us open

06 July 2012

not exactly

mr. erin LOVED east nashville and said he wanted to stick around, but we're a team now, so he made the rest of the journey to memphis. we just watched Murray advance to the final!
IRONY ALERT: i "rescued" mr. erin to keep a guy from taking him to a bar. now here we are, 1100 miles away at a bar.

joel, you owe me $500 (million) doll(h)a(i)rs.

Roger Federer had lost six of seven matches to Novak Djokovic, most recently last month in a dispiriting, straight-set affair in the French Open semifinals.
But that was on red clay during a soggy second week in Paris when it was even tougher than usual to breach Djokovic’s formidable defenses.
Wimbledon was rainy, too, on Friday. But Centre Court now has a retractable roof and so Federer, with his suspect back and grand plans, was able to stay safe and dry on his favorite tennis court; able to shift the momentum of a great rivalry back his own way with a stirring and surprising 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory in the semifinals.
“Obviously I’m ecstatic; I’m so happy,” Federer said. “I played a great match today.”
...
At age 30, Federer, the smooth-moving and enduring Swiss champion, is now just one victory away from tying William Renshaw and Pete Sampras with a seventh Wimbledon singles title. He is also only one victory away from reclaiming the No. 1 ranking.

wimbledupdate!

oh no. both williams sisters lost today. and so did #1 seed, something wozniaki. so the ladies' draw just got BO-RING. better luck on the doubles court, girls. ;(
on the gentlemen's side, who's still in?
all of 2Pz favorites: feddy, rafa, djokovic, and that scottish idiot, andy murray. (djv, tell everyone your massacre story, so i can make massacre jokes when he inevitably loses another wimbledon!)
who's out?
every american except mardy fish. (?)
right now:
rafa's 2 games away from defeating del potro.
feddy's up two sets to one on some no-name.

and now you're all caught up!

07 July 2010

blast from the past

Martina Hingis and Anna Kournikova paired in an invitational doubles match at Wimbledon last week. Isn't that weird? Sad really, because the two of them are in between Venus and Serena in age, and should really be competing, not performing.

25 June 2010

from P to A

the dutch strike again.

john isner, that dude that spent the last 3 days of his life playing the longest tennis match in history, just lost in 3 real quick sets to an unranked dutchman. some sources say he lost the first set in 16 minutes. the full match only lasted an hour and fifteen.

final score: 6-0, 6-3, 6-2.

guess he was real tired. how emBEARassing.

24 June 2010

wimbledon update

FINAL UPDATE : ISNER WINS 70-68 in the fifth set!!!

american (and georgia bulldog bulldyke) john isner is currently wrapped up in a match with french frog nicolas mahut. its a record breaker already, 4-4, 6-3, 7-6, 6-7, 41-42.... and counting. they have been playing for five eight hours. its the most games ever in a set.

all i can say is that if it was a tennisvol out there, this game would have been wrapped up hours ago. good luck john.

UPDATE: "Everybody's watching it in the locker rooms, everywhere. That's the longest match by far any tournament, any Grand Slam. Of course, two big servers. Yeah, I don't know, maybe they should agree on playing tiebreak if it's 50-all."  -novak djokovic

UPDATE 2: 54-54 and 9+ hours. right, emilube?

UPDATE 3: they're taking a break at 58-58 before someone has a bathroom accident. it's getting dark, they could either a) move to a lighted court, or b) pick it up tomorrow morning. what to YOU think they should do?

UPDATE 4: For a second day, the match between John Isner and Nicolas Mahut, the longest tennis match in history, has been suspended because of darkness. (via)
SCORE: 4-6, 6-3, 7-6, 6-7, 59-59.
