are you watching the world cup?

the USWNT play germany in the semi-finals tonight (7pm EST on fox).

read THIS to get caught up:
The game should be a great one. Consider that Germany has scored the most goals this tournament (20), and the U.S. has allowed just a single goal. The U.S. and Germany have each won the World Cup twice.
The United States reached the semifinals primarily on the strength of its defense: The team hasn't given up a goal since the tournament opener five games ago against Australia. The U.S., led by goalkeeper Hope Solo, have held opponents scoreless for 423 consecutive minutes (the longest stretch for the U.S. in World Cup history). The U.S. also is the only country to reach the semifinals in all seven World Cup tournaments.
and if you really want to get into strategy...read THIS.

¡grupo....de la MUERTA!

the world cup 2014 group drawing happened today....and it is TERRIBLE news for the estados unidos.
Every World Cup has had a so-called "Group of Death," or the group that pits together several favored heavyweights to battle it out, often sending a top-ranked team home. This year's draw could put those to shame though. "World Cup 2014 promises to be a tournament so suffocatingly competitive that the traditional clichéd "Group of Death" will feel redundant," ESPN explained. Due to a draw quirk, one potential group could include the frightening powers of Brazil, Italy, the Netherlands and the United States together; "The Group of Death to end all Groups of Death," as SB Nation called it.
UPDATE: The U.S. has landed in Group G, with Ghana (a team that has beaten the U.S. in the last two World Cups), Germany (the team that U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann used to captain as a player), and Portugal (a perennial world power.) (via)
i know what you're thinking: "what else can you tell me about that armadillo mascot?!?!"

his name is fuleco, and this is his wikipedia page. i see that he's a three-banded armadillo, which any armadillo connoisseur worth her wait in ants can tell you is the only kind of armadillo that can roll into a ball!

important tina turner citizenship news!!

Those famous legs will soon no longer be the famous legs of an American: Tina Turner is handing in her U.S. passport and becoming a Swiss citizen. It's not quite as nefarious as Gerard Depardieu's exodus from France — though inevitably comparisons will be made, Fox News — since, according to the AFP, the Tennessee-born singer has lived in Switzerland since 1995, when she moved along with her partner, Erwin Bach, a German record executive. in VOLympian news

former tennessee volunteer, aries merritt, took home a gold for the US last night in the men's 110-meter hurdles.
LONDON - In his first Olympic Games, former Tennessee Vol standout Aries Merritt jumped out to an early lead in the 110-meter hurdles final and never looked back as the U.S. Track & Field team member captured the Olympic gold medal on Wednesday night in convincing fashion at Olympic Stadium in London.
Merritt, who won both his qualifying and semifinal heats, improved his personal-best mark to 12.92 and finished steps in front of U.S. teammate Jason Richardson (13.04). His mark of 12.92 is the fastest in the world in 2012 and the second fastest time in Olympic history. (via)
you can watch the final here. did you know that in hurdles, you're allowed to knock them over, as long as you don't do it "purposely". why even have them, you know what i'm saying?

lando's pregnant

joel's not going to like this.

His team crashed out of the World Cup this weekend, and now Landon Donovan faces a personal crisis: a forthcoming report from a U.K. newspaper in which a British woman claims she is pregnant with Donovan's child.

Donovan, 28, is separated from his wife, actress Bianca Kajlich, but they are not divorced – a fact the U.S. soccer star emphasized last week, after he and Kajlich shared an emotional phone call following his winning goal against Algeria.

Regarding the pregnancy report, Donovan did not deny it might be true, telling Sports Illustrated's Web site: "I was informed of the possibility during the World Cup, and if I need to take responsibility, then I will provide the appropriate support. This is a private matter, and I will refrain from further comment at this time." (via)
