mexican design firm envision's trump's wall
because the wall has to be beautiful, the design references luis barragán’s pink walls that are emblematic of mexico. it also takes advantage of the tradition in architecture of megalomaniac wall building. moreover, the wall is not only a wall—as you can see in the hill landscape cross-section it is a prison where 11 million undocumented people will be processed, classified, indoctrinated, and/or deported. great news for me and you, but mostly me!
Kirby just told me about a new mexican food place that opened around the corner from our apartment. Cerveceria Havemeyer by the same owners as La Superior and Cantina Royal will be the new Taco Chulo backup spot. Twerk around the corner and drink a margarita!

some long form reading
some of you may have heard of / read the bestselling book, "born to run", featuring ultramarathon runner micah true's relationship with a remote long-distance-running mexican tribe. he recently went missing and was found dead in the wilderness of new mexico, and the new york times published a really great feature on him. check it out if you have some time.
His story was exuberantly molded into legend in the 2009 best-seller “Born to Run” by Christopher McDougall. Caballo Blanco, however private and self-effacing, was suddenly delivered to the world as a prophet, “the lone wanderer of the High Sierras.” To many, he represented the road not taken, a purer path, away from career, away from capitalism, away from the clock.
McDougall, himself a runner, was one of the dozens who had hurried to southwestern New Mexico to join the search, as had the actor Peter Sarsgaard, who was about to direct a movie based on the book. In just a few days, the Gila Wilderness had become a lodestone to a who’s who of ultramarathoners, athletes with loose limbs, lanky bodies and now a shared sense of dread.
“We’re thinking he could be lying out there hurt, unable to get help,” said the ultrarunner Luis Escobar, who had driven all night from California. (via)

what did thomas wilhelm do this weekend?
speaking of monkeys....Roberto Sol Cabrera, a Mexican citizen, was stopped at a random check at Mexico City's international airport after arriving from Lima.In a statement, police said Mr Cabrera Zavaleta had been behaving "nervously".
Once he was searched, it was discovered that he had hidden 18 titi monkeys in a girdle around his waist. (via)

impending apocalypse much?

"Brothers traveling in Mexico during Sunday's deadly earthquake photographed a surreal sight: The power of the quake lifting a layer of dust off a mountain range. The dramatic photographs were shot by Roberto and Adrian Marquez Marquez just after the 3:40 p.m magnitude 7.2 quake. The pictures show the area around La Rumorosa, the highest point in Tecate."
