great news for me and you, but mostly me!
Kirby just told me about a new mexican food place that opened around the corner from our apartment. Cerveceria Havemeyer by the same owners as La Superior and Cantina Royal will be the new Taco Chulo backup spot. Twerk around the corner and drink a margarita!

here are the latest renderings from the ongoing quest to ruin the north brooklyn waterfront:
this was brought to my attention by thomas wilhelm, who raises an excellent question: how are all these people going to get to work, the L TRAIN?!?!
aaaaaaaaHAH AHaHAHAhAHA HA ahAH!!!
When Two Trees plunked down $185 million to buy the Domino Sugar Factory development site last summer, the already-approved plans for four-towers and 2,200 apartments were universally hated. The hulking buildings were bland and boxy, so Two Trees went to SHoP Architects (is there any major project these guys don't get?) and asked them to make it better—and by God, they did. Here now, we bring you the first renderings of the new New Domino. The number of apartments is the same, but SHoP added 60 percent more open space, two office buildings, a school, and more community amenities. SHoP principal Vishaan Chakrabarti and Two Trees Director of Special Projects David Lombino shared the 3.3 million-square-foot plan with us, detailing how this mega project is fundamentally different from the Brooklyn waterfront developments that came before it. (via)i don't hate the architecture. if we've got to put some huge buildings right there, it'd be nice if they were kind of cool.

greenpoint is the new williamsburg
On a scorching July afternoon, the frisson of hustle and bustle that delineates the weekday rush hour was in full swing at the intersection of Greenpoint and Manhattan Avenues, the dowdy commercial heart of Greenpoint. Horns blared, and unlike other times of day or night, when the traffic ranges from intermittent to invisible, pedestrians actually did have to look both ways before jaywalking. In this, the genuine Brooklyn, crosswalks are for sissies, classic apartments are walk-ups, loud is the default sound level, and burly men of a certain vintage still wear sleeveless undershirts in public.
Until Greenpoint’s artsy sister neighborhood to the south, Williamsburg, set a brash example by surrendering to glassy condominium and hotel towers and urbane renewal that yanked the cost of shelter in a Manhattan-ish direction, vinyl-sided six-family tenements were the backbone of the housing stock here. And century-old trees shaded the crumbling sidewalks. But lately the biggest shadow being cast in Greenpoint belongs to Williamsburg.
Vinyl siding doesn’t represent Greenpoint’s cachet any longer; virtual doormen, rooftop farms, artisanal gin and brick-faced condominiums do. The virtual gatekeeper is a prime amenity at the sold-out 93-unit Pencil Factory condominium on West Street, where the penthouse sold for just over $1 million, a neighborhood first. (via)

that place is gonna be crooooowwwddddeeeeeeddddddd....
Williamsburg will be the next nabe to welcome Whole Foods. Sleuths have ferreted out that a stalled site at 242 Bedford Ave. by North Fourth Street will be rejuvenated with the organic grocer and a New York Sports Club in the base with luxe apartments above, rather than the middling mix of Marshall’s and CVS reported elsewhere a year ago. oh, and speaking of williamsburg dining...
guess what opened this week: the meatball shop on bedford!
egg's expanding.
There's good news in the air for the devotees of Williamsburg's Egg, George Weld's farm-driven, Southern comfort food establishment on North 5th Street. For the past five months, Weld and his team have been renovating a new space just two blocks away at 109A N. 3rd, next to Mast Brothers Chocolate. Details are still hazy, but Weld says the new, "more relaxed" restaurant will "grow organically out of Egg," and better integrate their farm. Expect a focus on dinner service this time, along with a stronger emphasis on vegetables. Weld is still looking for some more funding, so there's no word on an opening date just yet. (via)do not look directly AT the biscuit unless you're in the mood for a mouth full of saliva.
i see you in there, fig jam.

(unsurprisingly) Joe Jonas has balls pelted at face
from a NY daily news blurb via gawker:
We bet Joe Jonas wants to "See No More" of Williamsburg. The middle Jonas brother got a rough reception in Brooklyn's hipster capital on Wednesday night when audience members at the Paper magazine party pelted him with mini-basketballs and greeted his performance with a mixture of derision and stony silence.omg, what was he thinking? williamsburg?
