mystery solved : 30 rocky top edition
boy, oh boy, do i have an article for you. a query that has been pestering me for years came to an exciting conclusion during this morning's commute. let me begin at the beginning.
on november 15, 2007, i was watching 30 rock. you probably remember. it was the episode guest starring edie falco as a democratic congresswoman from vermont, with whom jack has a tryst. in one of my favorite scenes in all of 30 rock history, the two are conversing at a party, and the following dialogue ensues:
ALEC BALDWIN [to bartender]: I'll have a white rum with diet ginger ale and a splash of lime.LOL, right?
EDIE FALCO: Wow. I never would have pegged you for a University of Tennessee sorority girl.
[EDIE FALCO exits]
BARTENDER: Sir, here's your "Nancy Drew."
ALEC BALDWIN [looking offended]: For men it's called a "Hardy Boy."
i've always been curious about how this honor came to be bestowed upon my prestigious alma mater, and i assumed i would never ever ever know.
then, i was watching last week's 30 rock episode, in which jack and liz travel to his mother's home in florida after her death. there, they learn that the woman believed to be her housekeeper is actually her live-in lesbian lover. spoiler alert retroactive.
while attempting to confirm their suspicions, the woman drops the following line on her way to heat up a pot of blue gatorade for them:
"I DVRed a documentary about the woman who designed all of Pat Summitt's blazers."LOL, right?
anyway, i texted fellow 30 rock aficionado thomas wilhelm that i thought there must be a UT alum involved in the writing over there. this was no coincidence.
speaking of coincidences (!!), you may remember yesterday when i alerted you to the latest episode of alec baldwin's podcast in which he interviews lena dunham. i listened to it on the subway last night, and they mentioned a guest from a couple episodes ago, paula pell.
she is a writer on SNL, and lena had some very complimentary things to say about her. i still had that episode on my phone, so this morning, i gave it a listen. alec reminded us that she was mentioned in tina fey's book, during a story about how tina once fought to keep this kotex classic sketch, written by pell, in an episode. they also played the audio from her tylenol BM sketch, in which alec appeared while hosting.
in the midst of their conversation, which was pretty entertaining, alec asks paula where she went to college. first of all, what are the odds that he asks that question. second of all, THE ANSWER WAS THE UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE.
i followed up with a little more research at my desk when i got to work and confirmed that she has done some writin' for 30 rock.
THE END YOU'RE WELCOME GO VOLS.

30 rock soundtrack!
Much of that double CD consists of the show's score by composer Jeff Richmond, also a producer of the show and Tina Fey's husband. But it also includes songs from the show. And yes, that means we get "Werewolf Bar Mitzvah", "Muffin Top", and the cast's showstopping rendition of "Midnight Train to Georgia". (via)how lucky are we?!

tracy morgan and me

in case you dont follow me on twitter, i should probably tell you about tracy morgan last night. i went to a comedy show he was headlining at zanies with @ripleypickles and chip. i can tell you without reserve that he is a self-described deviant, and holds nothing back. he is raunchy and sexist and racist and gaycist and above all hilarious. all in all, it was a totally appropriate way to get drunk on sunday.

My favorite street
Just a quick stroll over the Pulaski Bridge from my apartment, Manhattan Avenue in Greenpoint is one of my favorite places to go explore on a warm afternoon, buy a halloween costume, or buy candy. It seems that I am not the only one to have discovered some of it's many delights. However, Tina Fey expresses her love for Manhattan Ave.'s delights more eloquently than I could ever hope. She tells Esquire:
"The best doughnut? That's Peter Pan doughnuts in Brooklyn. It's a Polish bakery. We shot nearby once for 30 Rock. It's a white-cream-filled powdered doughnut. And I really believe, when I first tried it, if I had a penis, I would put it in this doughnut. I finally understand what you guys are thinking about and what motivates you guys."
I am locked up in Manhattan, which is not the same as Manhattan Avenue, so I unfortunately cannot go try these donut whores for myself. They're just asking for it. I will add them to my list.
Keep an eye out for future Manhattan Ave. posts.

inevitable
but annoying...
Reportedly, Hulu will start its for-pay model slowly, charging just for episodes of 30 Rock, House, and Modern Family. Now, these shows are on network television: NBC, FOX and ABC, respectively. In other words, these programs are free to watch anyway (assuming the presence of a television set), even for people who don't pay for cable service.
Another proposed plan would allow Hulu users to watch the five most recent episodes of a program but require a monthly subscription (at $4.99 a pop) to watch older episodes. Hulu executives recognize that in order to make subscriptions attractive, they would need to offer at least 20 TV series in their entirely. Five bucks per month is much cheaper than a cable bill, for people who want to get their fill of basic-cable fare (Mad Men! Damages!) over their laptops.

looks like jack donaghy's got a new boss...
After nearly nine months of negotiations, Comcast, the nation’s largest cable operator, finally reached an agreement on Thursday to acquire NBC Universal from the General Electric Company.
The deal valued NBC Universal at about $30 billion.
The agreement will create a joint venture, with Comcast owning 51 percent and G.E. owning 49 percent. Comcast will contribute to the joint venture its stable of cable channels, which includes Versus, the Golf Channel and E Entertainment, worth about $7.25 billion, and will pay G.E. about $6.5 billion in cash, for a total of $13.75 billion. For now, the network will remain NBC Universal, but ultimately Comcast could decide to change the name. (via)

30 rock doesn't translate
a channel in germany just started running 30 rock episodes, and turns out they are not popular at all! the nytimes specualates that perhaps the jokes are too based in american pop-culture, but also hypothesizes that it might be inadequate billing in the network's show description, which they ran through google translate:
Episode 1 - The New Boss
The aspiring manager has achieved great success with a new microwave oven for the NBC parent company General Electric - he was quickly promoted to station boss and Liz put in front of the nose. The absolute Fernsehlaie want to miss the show a new look.
As the first official act he rolls behind Liz’s back to the concept of the show and simply requires the eccentric movie star Tracy Jordan (Tracy Morgan) for the consignment. But that’s beginning for long-term single and a workaholic Liz Lemon until their problems, as well as for her private life, Jack has really great ideas. (via)
