SASSY!

A Central Texas resident Sarah Slamen brought down the hammer of citizen justice on the Senate Health and Human Services Committee's anti-choice members with an excoriation for the ages — until she was unceremoniously shut down by Chairwoman Jane Nelson (R) mid-speech, and then dragged away by four DPS Troopers. after we ride the fun slide, lets go see a movie

If you’ve seen the OWS protest signs that read I’LL BELIEVE THAT CORPORATIONS ARE INDIVIDUALS WHEN TEXAS EXECUTES ONE—and nodded approvingly—there’s an excellent chance that you’ll also love Werner Herzog’s bracing new documentary, Into the Abyss.

Herzog structures his true-crime story around jailhouse interviews with a killer named Michael Perry—who was executed just eight days after his last meeting with the director. But the film is also a portrait of a Texas town that’s so weird, in so many messed-up ways, that it might as well have come from one of Herzog’s whacked-out feature films (or, better yet, one of David Lynch’s). This time out, Herzog lets his subjects, and his camera, do most of the talking; as a result, Into the Abyss is one of his plainest-looking films. But it’s also full of ironies, revelations, jaw-dropping bits, and terribly sad moments—so many of them that, for once, Herzog’s ultra-impassioned narration doesn’t seem overwrought. Into the Abyss ends up being one of his best films, and one of the year’s best documentaries. via

i don't understand it...

The member presidents of the Southeastern Conference unanimously voted to accept Texas A&M Tuesday night as the league's 13th member, but the Aggies' official acceptance has been delayed by the potential threat of legal action.
The SEC's presidents want assurances that no individual Big 12 school will sue for contractual interference over Texas A&M's departure. Baylor has not given that assurance to this point, according to sources.
"We were notified yesterday afternoon that at least one Big 12 institution had withdrawn its previous consent and was considering legal action," University of Florida president and SEC chairman Dr. Bernie Machen said in a statement released Wednesday. "The SEC has stated that to consider an institution for membership, there must be no contractual hindrances to its departure.
" The SEC received written assurance from the Big 12 on Sept. 2 that it was free to accept Texas A&M as a member, Machen said.
The Big 12 scheduled a conference call of officials at all 10 member schools for Wednesday afternoon, sources said.
Texas A&M had planned a celebration and news conference at the College Station campus for Wednesday but that is now on hold. (via)
...and i won't respond to it. i will inform you, however, that that lovely lady pictured above is texas a&m's mascot, as it turns out. i had no idea!

 thx deej.

¿texas for amnesty?

well...for people who hire illegal aliens to tend their houses, pools and yards.
As proposed, House Bill 2012 would create tough state punishments for those who "intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly" hire an unauthorized immigrant. Violators could face up to two years in jail and a fine of up to $10,000.

But it is an exception included in the bill that is drawing attention. Those who hire unauthorized immigrants would be in violation of the law -- unless they are hiring a maid, a lawn caretaker or another houseworker
i mean, don't get texas wrong, people coming into this country illegally is wrong! and people hiring illegal aliens is also wrong! and all of those people deserve to be punished. but...c'mon! the people hiring them are white, so... besides, it would be so damn expensive and time consuming to arrest all the white people hiring illegal aliens. it just doesn't make sense!
Texas state Rep. Aaron Pena, a Democrat, said the exception is a wise one.

"With things as they are today, her bill will see a large segment of the Texas population in prison" if it passes without the exception, he said.

"When it comes to household employees or yard workers, it is extremely common for Texans to hire people who are likely undocumented workers," Pena said. "It is so common, it is overlooked."
now, what to do about the seven to twelve million illegal aliens who aren't cleaning houses and mowing lawns? duh, deport them! they're brown.

brb outside : austin!

as many of you know, i spent last weekend in the happiest place on earth: austin, texas. i had never been, and my hosts, jeff, hank, and erin baker mooney gave me a wonderful tour. we spent most of our time eating, drinking, and relaxing outdoors. i even got a little bit of a suntan! here are some pixies.
the view from the mooneys'.
this is hank. he is a goldendoodle, and he will carry his own leash.
this is how he rides in cars.
this is a picture of him jumping for a stick in zilker park, which is one of his favorite places.
south congress street is a really cute part of town, featuring lots of boutiques, restaurants, bars, etc.
food truck park on south congress. what are you lookin' at, glasses?
 i had a chicken-fried avocado for lunch at doc's.
this is a really great shirt that i found at storyville.
a mural inside home slice pizza, which erin constructed pretty much by herself.
the austin motel.
not on congress, but still. look at that.
austin is very dog-friendly, which means hank gets to come to happy hour, this time at clive.
hank shares a stick with his friends jake and ruby.
jeff had a little dinner table accident at polvos : before (notice the precarious perch)
after. ;(
 hank at the pool.
hank at brunch at austin java.
hank on one of his favorite trails.

Prada : Marfa

Have you ever noticed the large pop art "PRADA, MARFA, 1837 mi ->" print in the Van der Woodsen penthouse on gossip girl? I just noticed and googled and was directed to this blog that had previously googled what I just googled.

Apparently the print recognizes a permanent art installation located in an empty landscape in west Texas (nytimes), 26 miles away from the small town of Marfa, TX. I will leave the art history critique to you.

Don't you love it when tv teaches you something?
