The recent installation of 216 state-of-the-art electronically-controlled wave boards has made this the most sophisticated scientific wave-testing basin of its size in the world. Scaled-down fiberglass models, cruisers the size of canoes, ride waves that max out at a few feet high. But it’s the motion of the ocean that matters. The hinged wave boards, each with its own motor synced up to software, can precisely recreate eight ocean conditions (from flat calm to typhoonlike) across all seven seas, pushing the water and moving up and down like giant piano keys whose scales and chords are waves.

The Navy tests models in the basin to be sure that billion-dollar ships will float before it builds them, but also to assess whether sailors can launch missiles and land helicopters in particular circumstances, and how vessels handle with a full tank versus running on fumes. Pitch, roll, sway, heave, acceleration, displacement—the calculations alone are enough to make you queasy. (via)

3. tailgating!
everyone knows that half the fun of college football takes place before the players even take the field. tailgating is a mainstay of any successful gameday, and i would argue that no one does it better than the SEC. the term refers to the act of partying on or around the tailgate of a vehicle. however, this practice has evolved into a staple of college football tradition and culture.

from the grove of ole miss to the decks of the vol navy, fans have been known to wake up at all hours of the morning to get a head-start on the day's festivities. a noon kickoff means you better be outside and drinking by 8am at the latest. rules is rules, and i don't make them.

no tailgate would be complete without the phenomenon of cornhole, which has taken the world by storm over the past decade. the crisp thud of a well-worn bag on a warm fall afternoon is enough to jolt the volunteer heart right out of the past nine vacuous months of football-less-ness.

so everyone drag out the bags-and-boards, plug in the jambox, and fire up the grill, because football season arrives tomorrow, the vols take the field in 3 short days, and those natty lights aren't going to drink themselves!!!

we left off at our arrival in downtown knoxville yesterday. now for some boat pictures.

some rich folks' boats. the first one (sensation) had a home port of bikini, marshall islands. i'm assuming they have low luxury taxes. if you look closely you can see a delta boat and two jetskis behind the flag. that second boat is called the reel deal. it belongs to the ceo of regal cinemas.


the sensation from the other side. it makes albert haynesworth's boat look like a dinghy. as you can see, there are lots of classy boats in the vol navy.


there are also plenty of klassy boats in the vol navy.

i went to knoxville this weekend for the game between the university of tennessee volunteers and the florida technical community college alligators. it was a good time to be had by all. i will post a bunch of pictures now that will make y'all want to join me next time. we started the day at the gaylord's house (above).

some of the guys. the guy in the iowa shirt is dating a tennessee friend. he conceded that the game was the loudest sporting event he'd ever been to and acknowledged the sec as far superior to the big 11.

there was some beautiful scenery along the 22 mile trip upstream to the game, like this giant flag. and some cliffs and stuff.



pretty much every tennessee grad has a house like this because were all so smart.

"A federal judge in Riverside declared the U.S. military’s ban on openly gay service members unconstitutional Thursday, saying the 'don't ask, don't tell' policy violates the 1st Amendment rights of lesbians and gay men. U.S. District Court Judge Virginia A. Phillips said the policy banning gays did not preserve military readiness, contrary to what many supporters have argued, saying evidence shows that the policy in fact had a 'direct and deleterious effect' on the military. Phillips said she would issue an injunction barring the government from enforcing the policy. However, the U.S. Department of Justice, which defended 'don’t ask, don’t tell' during a two-week trial in Riverside, will have an opportunity to appeal that decision." more info
