secretive oil billionaires
the more you know
President Obama's first reelection ad has arrived, and it's set to hit airwaves on Thursday, January 19. The subject: Obama's energy record. The opponents: the Koch Brothers, whom Obama referenced as "secretive oil billionaires" at the very beginning of the 30-second spot. The narrator cites Obama's "unprecedented" ethics record before launching into a defense of his impact on energy and the environment. With a shot of the Koch-funded Americans for Prosperity ad as backdrop, the one that suggests that Obama awarded contracts to now-defunct solar energy company Solyndra as a political favor, the narrator says that it's "not tethered to the facts.” According to the Times, the ad will run in battleground states like Michigan, Ohio, Virginia, and North Carolina, beginning Thursday. A little something for those folks to look forward to during 30 Rock.

speaking of pangins...
The Taurunga oil spill off the coast of New Zealand unleashed 2,500 barrels of heavy fuel into a fragile ecosystem, coating thousands of local seabirds in oil. This puts many of them — particularly the mind-meltingly adorable Little Blue Penguin — at serious risk of freezing and/or being poisoned to death.thx john!
...
A call put out by Grist.org asks for the world to send in penguin sweaters, which will keep them warm and prevent them from preening and swallowing the toxic oil on their feathers until workers can remove it. A decade ago, a similar incident in the region asked for "penguin jumpers," and many Little Blues have already been outfitted from whatever stockpiles were left over. (via)

tennessee's new governor oil gazillionaire bill haslam made his first executive act an order that allowed himself and top aides permission not to disclose how much they earn in outside income.
this is the complete opposite of the first executive act of his predecessor phil bredesen. weird.

bad news for the gulf of mexico
An oil rig 80 miles off the coast of Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico is still burning after an explosion around 9 a.m. this morning, according to the Coast Guard. There were thirteen people aboard the rig, which is owned by Mariner Energy, and all but one are now accounted for. Helicopters and planes are currently en route to aid survivors. oil-covered foot in mouth
did you guys hear about the BP spokesman who referred to gulf residents affected by the life-ruining oil spill as the "small people"?
“We care about the small people. I hear comments sometimes that large oil companies, or greedy companies, don’t care. But that is not case in BP, we care about the small people.” (via)
how rude.
This evening, Mr. Svanberg issued a statement saying he was “very sorry” for speaking “clumsily.”
“What I was trying to say — that BP understands how deeply this affects the lives of people who live along the Gulf and depend on it for their livelihood — will best be conveyed not by any words but by the work we do to put things right for the families and businesses who’ve been hurt,” the statement said. (via)

the biggest queen in england
last week, 79 year old lord tebbit, a british conservative and a real c-u-next-tuesday, said this regarding president obama and his condemnation of BP and their unprecedented oil spill :
"The whole might of American wealth and technology is displayed as utterly unable to deal with the disastrous spill - so what more natural than a crude, bigoted, xenophobic display of partisan political Presidential petulance against a multinational company?"
awww. sad. poor little ol' BP, one of the largest corporations in the world, getting beat up just for pouring 90 million (and counting) barrels of oil into the gulf of mexico, causing as-of-yet untold economic and environmental damage. oyr, gmafb. btw, nice alliteration you old ass BITCHHHH. [via]

pay no attention to the pelican covered with oil
it seems BP has been doing all it can to prevent reporters from gaining access to the most devastated areas of coastal louisiana, and local and federal officials are helping them do so.

that doesn't look like paint to me...
This is what New York's rage against BP looks like.
All over town, BP gas station signs are being vandalized with brown paint - even atop 30-foot poles.
"It appears they put it inside water balloons and throw them at the sign," a police source said.
A paint remover who was cleaning blotches of brown paint off a sign on E. 125th St. said he had been to five other BP stations since late May.
"People are getting mad at BP," the worker said. "They are throwing paintballs. All of them are brown. The same paint. Maybe it is the same person." (via)

oil spill FAIL
according to the internet, BP's about to admit that they're never going to be able to stop the oil spill, and we should all just start getting used to it.
