want to go on a new podcast adventure with me?

i just heard of this on the internet. sarah koenig from this american life is doing a new podcast called serial.
Serial is a podcast where we unfold one nonfiction story, week by week, over the course of a season. We'll stay with each story for as long as it takes to get to the bottom of it.
the first season, of which 4 eps have been released, follows a mURdEr mYsTErY!!
On January 13, 1999, a girl named Hae Min Lee, a senior at Woodlawn High School in Baltimore County, Maryland, disappeared. A month later, her body turned up in a city park. She'd been strangled. Her 17-year-old ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed, was arrested for the crime, and within a year, he was convicted and sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison. The case against him was largely based on the story of one witness, Adnan’s friend Jay, who testified that he helped Adnan bury Hae's body. But Adnan has always maintained he had nothing to do with Hae’s death. Some people believe he’s telling the truth. Many others don’t.
let's listen, together!

a box turtle's wild adventure

some real jerks in california taped a turtle to a bunch of balloons and sent him aloft. he was discovered later twisted up in some trees, and the fire department showed up to cut him down. the outrage of the witnesses in this story is palpable. what if the turtle just wanted to take a trip? thx for the tip melissa

only in that it never happened! the vet had an emergency and had to cancel on lil' ol' yella, so he got to go for a walk instead. he saw some ducks in a pond and JUMPED IN!

looks like he's living each day like it might be his last. i hope he gets those results soon.

after-work edition

last night, i had a hankerin' for some chipotle, so i invited joel to escort me to one. after dropping my copy of hunger games off with starla, i met him at madison square park, which is where this nightmarish sculpture is currently living.

it is insane. i think i like it.

mmmm chipotle.

next, we stopped at paragon sports so i could get some grip tape for my tennis racquet, swiperlady. she looks great, right? orange strings are next. or i might get pink, so she'll match my bike, eric berry. what's your vote?

after paragon, we stopped to check out the new andy warhol statue in union square. cute, right?

our final destination (gulp) was the strand, where i picked up the second hunger games book!

gchatz w/ starla

me: well
tell me what happened
starla: well i am a little fuzzy on how we met
but i found a random drunk girl on the subway
i thought she went to uga
so i wanted to help her
me: ctm
starla: took her back to my apartment
well
she didnt make it back
bc she vommed all over herself
me: oh no
outside or inside?
starla: outside on the sidewalk
me: thats good
starla: in front of my building
so my neighbors called the police
me: omg
did the police come?
starla: yes, then an ambulance
she was dead weight, couldnt walk or talk
i looked super creeps, like a kidnapper
me: lol
starla: bc i didnt know her name
but i didnt want to leave her in the subway
if i was thinking straight, i would have taken her upstairs at houston, rummaged through her phone and called a friend
but in my head since i thought she went to uga
i was like "i'll let this girl sleep on my couch"
DRUNK
so i couldnt get her off the subway at my stop
and so we went down to south ferry where a guy had to help me carry her
a HOT MESS
me: wow
thats an incredible story
starla: yep
the cops were real confused as how i came to have this girl in my possession
my neighbors were like "quit talking"
i guess my story was changing
they were disgusted
bc this chick was throwing up mexican food
lol
me: hahahaha

unstoppable.

just wanted to tell you about this little tradition bun-bun and i share. whenever we're going to the same place after work, we attempt what we call "subway meet-ups". as i'm typically coming from penn station, and he from chelsea, we often both end up using the 2/3 or the A/C/E lines, but starting at different stations. we coordinate our timing and car selection so that we end up with a together-ride. tonight's is going to be very challenging, here is an excerpt from our planning session:

Rob: train meet up?
me: definitely
i was thinking about it this morning
its going to be a complicated one!
Rob: im more excited about it than is rational
me: maybe the toughest yet
Rob: you arriving to penn?
me: yes
we're gonna need the uptown E
you're only one stop away right?
Rob: yes. ok, where is the best spot on train for the transfer to g?
me: well thats what im concerned about
the best spot for the transfer is the first car
my access point at penn is at the back of the train
and i hardly ever make the walk to the front before the train comes
Rob: and i enter platform at first
same happens to me if im trying to get to back
me: so im worried that i wont be able to get to the front
Rob: what if i ride in the front looking out the front window and ill try to watch for you walking down the platform
if you're not at the front of the train i could always get out and wait for you at 34th st
me: yeah, i like that
i have cell service until i go through the turnstiles
ill tell you "im going in", and you get on the very next E train
and then ill book it to the front
Rob: lets make that our plan. no matter what we'll meet at the first car either in train or on platform
me: perfect
and as always....my train is scheduled to arrive at 6.25
but its usually a bit slow on fridays
of course ill keep you posted the entire way
Rob: let me know when youre njt is coming into the city and ill start shutting down
me: constant updates
Rob: ok

it is going to be just like this:

i'll let you know how it works out, and will also attempt to take pictures.

your fortnightly boat.

this guy is totally awesome!
PHILIPSBURG, St. Maarten — An 85-year-old British sailor who dreamed of crossing the Atlantic on a raft as a young boy has completed the journey in 66 days with three friends.

The 2,800-mile crossing to this Caribbean island, led by Anthony Smith of London, took about two months and was generally smooth except for damage to two rudders on the large, sail-powered raft.

"Some people say it was mad," he told The Associated Press when he arrived in St. Maarten Wednesday. "But it wasn't mad. What else do you do when you get on in years?"

remember passing notes?

you'd get a note from your friend in the hallway on your way to a class, then spend the majority of said class period writing back. you had your friends' class schedules memorized so you knew when you would pass whom in which hallway throughout the day, and you would prioritize your note-writing accordingly.

and remember how some people could fold up their notes to look like envelopes? gosh, jelly!

then there was in-class note passing. what a dangerous game that was! one time my biology teacher picked up a mean note my friend and i had been writing about her appearance. she began reading the note aloud smugly as if WE were the ones who were going to be emBEARassed. however, the joke was on her, and she was only burning herself.

riddled with guilt, i apologized the next day, but it was clear she was never going to forgive me. so, i switched to the other, better biology teacher. she let me bring my dog daisy in one day, and i invited daisy's doctor to talk about her health, and i got a 100 for my report on veterinary medicine as a branch of biological science.

just sayin'. times used to be better.
