the VMAs.
they happened! overall, they were kind of lame (unless you like awkward product placement!). the audience was too dumb to appreciate chelsea handler's antics. and unfortunately, her frequent inability to get through scripted teleprompter-delivered jokes didn't come off as cute as it does on her show. her lady gaga costume made me lol4realz, though.
i loved the skits she did with celebs like lindsay lohan and justin bieber.
anyway, i'll just show you some of my favorite things that happened.
LIKES:
usher's performance. LaZeRz!! his pants looked bad, but his set was 11 biscuits. for some reason, mtv won't give me the embed code, so click this.
bieber.
DISLIKES:
lady gaga winning every award. she's so annoying, and i'm done caring about her. jicyww.
so, i c and p'd pretty much the whole show for you. and i had to listen to that toshiba laptop commercial about twelve times to do so. so, why don't you share some of your likes and dislikes. and really make it worth my while.

florence + the machine's performance. i'm pretty sure no one in that room knew who she was, but hopefully they recognized that song from the eat, pray, love trailer or something. congrats to florence for 1) not lip-syncing (like eminem), and 2) getting some recognition about two years after she released her album. great job, mtv.
ROBYN! even though she only got about 30 seconds on the way to commerical, she totes killed it.
bieber.
kanye west debuted his new song 'runaway', and it was the best performance of the night, hands down. the lyrical content is a little strange, but that beat was sick! and you just witnessed the first time i've ever used 'sick' to describe anything. so. officially excited about his upcoming album.
DISLIKES:
lady gaga winning every award. she's so annoying, and i'm done caring about her. jicyww.
taylor swift's absolutely laughable performance of the song she wrote about kanye cutting her off at last year's VMAs. all i wanted was for him to do it again. just shut up, taylor swift.
ugh. that's enough, linkin park.

11 biscuits.
this amazing piece asks the question we've all been thinking: where is taylor swift's apology?Sure, she is the one who was wronged in this situation, but amends were made. Beyonce gave up her Beyonce Time so that Taylor could have more Taylor Time. If anything, this whole thing has made Taylor Swift more famous than ever. She should be thanking Kanye. But since public thank yous never seem to gain much traction, she might as well at least get an apology in there. For one, she can apologize for continuing to call herself a country singer. I HEARD YOUR SONG, TAYLOR SWIFT. That is a sub-grade Kelly Clarkson song is what that is. That is Avril Lavigne without the skateboard-flavored lip gloss. (via)
she totes owes us one. thx jvm.

the gaga performance
lady gaga was at the VMAs last night in case you didnt know. she had been hyping her perfomance for a while, talking her gaga speak about how it was going to be more performance art than production, and her ideas about the clothes and lighting of the show. blah blah. so did she put her money where her mouth is?
um, succinctly... yes.
the first half of the performance is fairly tame, excluding her bizarre outfit. some really nice singing and dancing, but things take a turn for the strange when she adopts a crutch and starts hobbling around and a dancer is wheeled out in a glitter wheelchair. then she bangs on the piano for a second liberace style and comes back bleeding from the chest (!). she starts wailing and her backup dancers decide to hang her in effigy. gulp. its a pretty transparent commentary on the high price of fame and celebrity, but i am happy to praise her for her bold vision and fearlessness. well played.
so thank you gaga for that show. you are a breath of fresh air in this often stale pop music scene. i do believe that it will be talked about for years to come, and will go down as one of the show-making moments mtv so desperately needs to stay relevant.
extended new moon trailer!!!!
this premiered during the VMAs last night. in my living room, we turned the lights off and held our breath and curled into fetal positions on the couch and watched through our fingers. john especially. 66 days!!!

stand-out VMA performances
there was one performance in particular that deserves its own post... if you know which one i'm referring to, then i think you'll agree. if you don't know yet, omg you are in for such a treat!!! that being said, i'd like to just tell you about some of the other moments that i found noteworthy.
just a quick note about pink. i am not all that pumped on her in general. i do like her newest song, but good lord...look at this trapeze act! it's weird and awkward and uncomfortable, but by the end i was impressed. it seemed she was really singing, too. was i tricked?
ok so. everyone take a deep breath. this is not for the weak at heart. do you ever think to yourself, "beyonce, yeah she's fantastic. but i just know there's no way she could get any better. because i mean. she's already perfect. but i'll watch this anyway."? well, you've never seen beyonce with LaSeRz!!!! she's got the robot-hand on. she's not wearing pants, but that's pretty standard these days. i just loved all the clydesdale stomping and the magic. 11 biscuits beyonce!!!
at the end of the show, beyonce's boo, jay-z took the stage with alicia keys to perform what is quickly becoming one of my favorite songs ever. mtv billed this performance as a love song and tribute to new york city, and it certainly read that way. goosebumps4dayzzz, am i right?! and zomg, look how much beyonce loves it! so cute!! if you don't own the blueprint 3, which came out on friday, get it. right now. it's h7d. sing it, alicia!!
ctm lady gaga at 4:18... oh. and WTF lil mama?!?!?!?!

the gaga arrives
lady gaga went to the VMAs last night. her escort for the evening was kermit the frog. she had previously been seen wearing said frog as an outfit (jean charles de castelbajac). unfortunately, kermit had to stay in the limo or behind a partition as he is simply a muppet and has someone's hand shoved up inside to animate him. that didnt stop gangsta gaga from giving him sweet kisses and loving his fuzziness. how romantic!
