sometimes things look better in scaffolding.
Monday night marked the debut of 488 glowing lamps that now line America's most famous obelisk. Their origin actually dates back to the 1990s, when Michael Graves was commissioned to design a curtain-like scrim for the monument during the structure's previous renovation. That design is being used again during current renovations, a look that stands out especially in daylight. The lamps, activated by sensors, light up from behind the scrim. one. huge. class. act

glenn beck will hold a "restoring honor" rally this august 28th, on the steps of the lincoln memorial. i tried to figure out wtf this rally is for, but as with most thinks associated with glenn beck, it makes absolutely no sense. if you have a ton of free time, and like torturing yourself, perhaps you can find some answers in this rambling interview he posted on his website. i crapped out about two sentences in.
regardless of beck's motivations, you should be aware that august 28th, 1963 is the day martin luther king gave his "i have a dream" speech...on the steps of the lincoln memorial. that's right, glenn beck is totally hitching is racist-cracker wagon to MLK jr's preeminent speech on racial equality. this is going to be rich.

washington dc : hollywood for ugly people
For some reason, nytimes magazine decided to spend a couple thousand words describing the social and professional comings and goings of a few of the young 20 somethings who work in DC. The life they lead sounds familiar, long hours, hard work, group living, themed keg parties, etc. The only thing that makes these kids special is that these lives are happening within the sphere of the Obama administration. Some began on the campaign trail, hauling luggage and performing other non-glamorous tasks, and have now been rewarded with other non-glamorous jobs in the White House.they struggle with the same issues as other young professionals: how to get drunk in an age of foursquare, facebook, twitter, and nonstop work emails while maintaining your job and self respect. you dont have to work in the white house to relate to these feelings, but wouldnt it be cool to work in the white house.
kylie had nothing to do with this post.

read this

Here is a nymag article written by Roger Lathbury, operator of a small publishing house that in the 90s was tantalizingly close to publishing a novella by J.D. Salinger. It's a quick read and an interesting insight into the eccentricity and paranoia surrounding the last years of Salinger's life.
