this is so ridiculous
Memphis City Councilwoman Janis Fullilove has received four death threats specifically related to her sponsorship of an LGBT anti-discrimination ordinance the city is considering. Someone else threw a dead cat onto her lawn.
a couple questions
1) what?
2) how are people so hateful?
3) where did they get the dead cat?
4) no wonder the mayor wants hire a pr company to make memphis residents like their city
what did you do last night?
you know gd well what we did! i just wanted to share a couple of pixies to show you what our BFF's robyn and kelis looked like. just great!
kelis went first and she looked just great in her mermaid minidress and gold glitter wig. she played pretty much her entire new album (which is great), and mixed in medleys of her past hits, as well as those of others like en vogue, madonna, kp and envyi (i know!). she was clearly playing to the gays with songs like 'sweet dreams', which concerns me a little, because i think she has a bit more depth than just a 'club diva'. but this album seems to be a step in a successful direction. keep pushing that envelope, girl. 11 biscuits!!
cOnFeTtI!!!
next up was robyn. gosh. i don't know how to explain what that was like. her energy level as a performer is up there with the greats. i haven't seen somebody work a stage like that since maybe tina turner. she danced harder than anyone in that place. it was just delightful. musically, the band did a great job of switching up some of the old classics. one of my favorite parts was when she took a banana break during the build up of 'dont fucking tell me what to do.' just danced around wearin' a beret and eatin' a banana.
at the end of robyn's set, she and kelis both treated us to the late 90's hits, in the form of this pretty amazing medley. so obvi, we had a great time. i'm hoping some better youtubes emerge over the next couple of days. i'll keep you posted. anyway... 11 jumpy and sweaty biscuits!!
she said we were the best crowd yet, and the condition of my vocal chords can attest to that. oh, and sway was there.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Titans are suing Southern California and coach Lane Kiffin for "maliciously" luring away assistant running backs coach Kennedy Pola a week before training camp opens.
Tennessee Football Inc., the company that owns the Titans, filed the lawsuit Monday in Davidson County Chancery Court against both the university and Kiffin.
The lawsuit accuses Southern California and Kiffin of violating Pola's contract that required him to have written permission to discuss a job with anyone other than the Titans. (via)i'll be honest, this claim doesn't seem to hold a lot of water. but, any attempt at consequences for lane kiffin's jerkstore behavior is ok by me. TITAN UP!

animal farm, the musical
Yes, “Animal Farm,” George Orwell’s not-so-adorable allegory that taught us that all animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others, is being prepared as a musical by Mr. Hall and Mr. John, the creative team behind “Billy Elliot the Musical,” The Daily Mail of London reported. (via)

the gut thrust.
noooooo this is not an edition of 'what is thomas wilhelm doing this weekend?'. i just listened to a bunch of super nerds tell me about some new research on morning edition. they've been studying how caterpillars walk, since they don't have bones.
they put the caterpillars on an x-ray treadmill and used lots of different methods to coax them into walking. when they got a look inside, they observed that the caterpillar has a very unique method of locomotion. it's called the gut thrust, and it goes like this:
speaking of thomas wilhelm, though, here goes one of his spirit animals! and look at this freak!

When the caterpillar finally did get moving, Simon and his advisor Barry Trimmer saw something really unusual. Just at the start of the caterpillar's step, something on its inside swayed forward. "Eventually we were able to establish that we were watching the gut moving back and forth," Simon says.
The team believes that this is an entirely new form of animal movement. They say they are unaware of any other animal where the insides move before the outsides do. (via)so.

UPDATE: the poll's busted. just vote in the comments!
melissa can have this puppy today if she chooses. she's a little unsure, and feeling a bit unsupported (probably joel's fault, sounds like craig's been really pulling his weight, i.e., puppy scouting). please vote in the poll above and let her know what you think is best.

just wanted a bear.
BLACKSBURG, S.C. -- A Blacksburg man accused of stealing a bear cub from an Upstate animal park is still in jail Wednesday. Meanwhile, his cousin says she took the bear from his home and brought it back to the zoo after he told her he had stolen it.
Investigators say Saturday night, John Chadwick Montgomery broke into Hollywild Animal park and absconded with Newell, a 7-month old black bear. Joy Crawford says Montgomery, her cousin, pulled up into her driveway on Sunday and told her he had stolen a bear.
"He said he just wanted a bear," says Crawford. (via)i feel ya, sir. thx alexandria!

one of the most fun things about mad men is anticipating what historic event will impact the story next. this NYT interactive graphic catalogs important events of the 1960's (including old-timey newspapaer articles) and how they were protrayed on the show, as well as milestones to come leading into the 70's. cool!
the new season premieres on sUnDaY!!!
