MU$☝☾ M☝NUT€ W/ M$D∆NG€L$ - SPRING IS HERE & HERE ARE THE JAMZ

March is outing like a lamb -

GRIMES REALiTi - a supposedly "failed" attempt at a song according to Grimes - part of her "lost album" that she trashed a few month ago because she thought it wasn't up to snuff.

KELELA - A MESSAGE PRODUCER BY ARCA - Apparently Arca and Kelela meet by randomly dancing with each other at a club - which I don't buy since Kelela is one of the gods of "weird R&B" and Arca worked on FKA twigs album and Bjork's so ya know.

ACTIVE CHILD - 1999 - kind of a "back to basics" for this guy after a very dancy snyth heavy ep featuring Ellie Goulding and those kinds of people.

fran lebowitz in elle

her style is certainly not my favorite thing about her, but i could listen to her talk about anything.
When we were young, we knew things. We knew basic history, even as it related to fashion. Now, when something reappears, an 18 year old has no clue that it's a revival. Despite the fact that they're almost always online they don't get references.
I think that's part of why visual things are becoming so derivative. Designers now, they all have these things called mood boards. I suppose they think a sense of discovery equals invention. It would be as if every writer had a board with paragraphs of other writers—'Oh, I'll take a little bit of this, and that, he was really good.' Yes, he was really good! And that is not a mood board, it is a stealing board.
READ IT.

serena x beyonce

read serena's vogue cover feature.
What is remarkable is the shot itself, given that , a non-size-zero woman, does not appear tightly-cropped in an explosion of hair and kohl (see Adele, whose portrait goes cleavage-deep), or distractingly framed by polka dots and headlight-eyes (see Lena Dunham). Rather, she is photographed by Annie Leibovitz face on at hip height, not shielding her body from the camera or wearing sleeves. When Mindy Kaling appeared in US Elle’s “Women in TV” issue, as one of four women (Zooey Deschanel, Allison Williams and Amy Poehler were the others) she was the only one shot in black and white – you can imagine the op-eds that followed. The same thing happened – super close crop – to Gabby Sidibe on the cover of US Elle in 2010. That Williams is black, not a model, and not dressed thematically in tennis whites is a big win for solid diversity representation. Let’s just hope it’s not a one-off. (via)

In a rare interview with the New York Times in January, 2015, Douglas—who described his brother as "a true psychopath"—spoke about the deaths of Robert's seven Alaskan Malamuts named Igor:

"Before the disappearance of my sister-in-law, Bob had a series of Alaskan Malamutes, which is like a husky," Douglas Durst said. "He had seven of them, and they all died, mysteriously, of different things, within six months of his owning them. All of them named Igor. We don't know how they died, and what happened to their bodies."
"In retrospect," he says, "I now believe he was practicing killing and disposing his wife with those dogs." Douglas also mentions that Robert would use Igor as a verb, claiming,
"When he was in jail in Pennsylvania, he was recorded saying, 'I want to Igor Douglas.'"
In that same interview Douglas said, "There's no doubt in my mind that if he had the opportunity to kill me, he would."

this is fascinating.

the university of tennessee will be making the licensing switch from adidas to nike this year. nike has proposed to unite all programs, both athletic and academic, under one brand. this includes making the power-T the official logo and doing away with the "lady vols" brand for women's teams. all in the name of "one tennessee".

the lady vols, however, object. and it's mixing up my feelings about feminism and gender-quality and brand strategy and pat summitt.
On Nov. 10, 2014 the university announced plans to transition all men’s and women’s athletic teams under the “Power T.” The decision coincided with a dual-rebrand between academics and athletics that would make the “Power T” the universal logo for the University of Tennessee, not just its athletic department. Under the new plan, which coincides with a shift from Adidas to Nike in athletic apparel, all sports programs except women’s basketball will be known as “Volunteers,” the nickname that’s defined the men’s side for decades. The change will be official on July 1.
UT first formed its women’s athletic department prior to the 1976-77 academic year, and the school had separate athletic departments until 2009. During that span the Lady Vols grew into one of the most impactful women’s brands in college sports. Lady Vols teams have won 11 national championships, including eight in women’s basketball, and 68 conference titles. The basketball team is the only program to play in all 33 NCAA tournaments since the NCAA began sanctioning women’s sports in 1981-82. An average of 11,038 fans attended Lady Vols home basketball games during the 2013-14 season, the highest average in the country.
But that success hasn’t been relegated to basketball. The Lady Vols softball team has reached six Women’s College World Series in the last 10 years. The women’s swim team has finished in the top 15 at the NCAA Championships in a school-record nine consecutive seasons. Tennessee won two women’s indoor track and field national championships (2005, 2009) within the last decade. That’s why many former student-athletes view the Lady Vols decision as a blow to a historic brand.
“Former Lady Vols always look after current Lady Vols,” Mansson said. “I got really upset because it felt like they took away my, and others’, identity.” (via)
in the end, the university has decided to let only the women's basketball program retain the lady vols logo, out of respect for the program's storied success under pat summitt, which seems like the worst possible solution.

meanwhile, deadspin's trying try to find a tennessee resident to request emails between nike and the university, if anyone feels like helping...

jerry saltz did NOT care for the bjork show at MoMA and seems to be kind of mad in general:
That sadness has mushroomed into dejection of late. Since 2004, when it reopened in its bland new Taniguchi building, many art-world conversations about New York museums circle back to and then plunge into people's pain, anger, sadness, and frustration about the Museum of Modern Art. On the one hand, the museum has the greatest collection of modern art on Earth. It always will. Yet not only is most of this collection permanently held captive in storage, what little of it is on view is seen in perhaps the most unpleasant viewing conditions in any major museum in the world — in far too few galleries that are far too small and poorly designed. Then there's the museum's twisted bid to transform itself into something like a multiplex mall, specializing in whiz-bang pop-cultural events. Now comes a Diller Scofidio + Renfro expansion plan meant to fix the problems it created in 2004, which looks much more likely to exacerbate them. (via)

what do you think?

(via)

thx a lot, de blasio!

there's a whole breakdown of just wtf exactly has been going on down in those tubes the last few months...
By one of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's measures, the total number of delays in 2014 increased an astonishing 45.6 percent over 2013. Even the MTA's less drastic numbers still point to slower service. More is at work here than meandering crowds of uncivilized cretins sullying the sacred shrine to transportation the the New York City subway once was. But the agency has no clear institutional explanation for the decline. (via)

how interesting.

here's a little insight into how house of cards is shot.
Almost every single frame of this show is composed to place a pale blue object in the foreground with a pale yellow light in the background. Now, sometimes the foreground object is more black than blue, sometimes the background veers toward a sickly green, sometimes they're outside and the background is necessarily blue or black sky, but once you begin noticing this particular habit of the House of Cards color pallete, it is hard to unsee. (via)
here's a podcast interview with the show's cinematographer.

on a related note, here's a list of ten films matthew weiner made required viewing for the cast & crew of mad men. jicydak, there's a big mad men exhibition opening march 14 at the museum of the moving image (shoutout flim).

awesome lady alert!

she is the only black lady to ever hold her specialized position.
In 2004 she was cross-commissioned into the USAF, a fairly rare occurrence in itself, and joined the elite U-2 Dragon Lady spy plane program. Within a year she had passed the incredibly challenging U-2 conversion syllabus and was soon flying combat missions around the globe. She has since gone on to get her Masters Degree in aeronautical science, she became the commander of the U-2 test detachment at Plant 42, served at NORAD, is now the 9th Reconnaissance Wing Inspector General and was recently selected for promotion to the rank of full Colonel.
